The Philippines is eyeing increased defence ties with India with the latter offering co-development and co-production of defence equipment. There has been an overall enhancement in bilateral defence cooperation across all sectors between both nations.
The fifth meeting of the India-Philippines Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) was held in Manila this month. It was co-chaired by India’s Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and his counterpart Senior Undersecretary, Ministry of National Defence of Philippines Irineo Cruz Espino. The JDCC construct has been established under the ambit of the Memorandum of Understanding on defence cooperation between India and the Philippines signed in 2006.
During the meeting, Aramane invited the Philippines to partner with the Indian defence industry in co-development and co-production of equipment. Espino also invited Indian investments in long-term equity partnership towards promoting assured supply chains. The opening of a Defence Wing at Embassy of India, Manila is planned to occur in the near future.
The Philippines is committed to a Self-Reliant Defense Posture, with a particular focus on supply chain resilience as a critical component of the country’s defense strategy. In a broader context, Secretary Teodoro stressed the necessity of engaging in dialogue with like-minded nations to build a framework for cooperation built on universally accepted principles of international law. He highlighted the need to create a “great net” that fosters regional stability and security.
