Poland will acquire 32 F-35A Lightning II fighter jets from the United States, with delivery set to begin in 2024.
The contract, signed by Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak on Jan. 31, is worth US$4.6 billion and also includes a training and logistics package. Poland, which has a fleet of 48 F-16 C/D Block 52+ fighters, will be the first military in the region to use the F-35s.
Speaking at the official signing ceremony on Jan. 31 in Deblin, where the Polish Air Force operates its 41st Training Aviation Base, Blaszczak said that the acquisition will enable the Polish military to make a technological leap.
“Lockheed Martin is honored by the Polish government’s decision to procure the F-35A Lightning II” said Greg Ulmer, Vice President and General Manager of the F-35 Program. ” We look forward to supporting the U.S. government in delivering the F-35 to meet Poland’s requirements.
“Poland is the 14th nation and 10th NATO country to join the program, a testament to the U.S. government’s confidence in the program,” added Ulmer. “The selection of the F-35 will extend our longstanding partnerships with the Polish government and local industry for decades to come.”
“The United States welcomes the Polish government’s decision to purchase 32 F-35A Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter aircraft worth $4.6 billion under the Foreign Military Sales program overseen by the U.S. Department of State,” said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “We commend President Duda, Prime Minister Morawiecki, and the Polish government’s commitment to continue modernizing Poland’s military through the acquisition of the world’s most advanced fighter aircraft, which will improve Poland’s ability to provide collective and self-defense.”
