Our Bureau - : Mar 6, 2024 - : 4:41 am

South Korean ammunition manufacturer Poongsan, which has seen surging interest for its products across regions, has signed an agreement with Barer Holdings, a Barzan Holdings company, to supply 600 million 5.56 mm rounds of ammunition. Barer will deliver the ammunition to Indonesia.

According to Clark Park, Poongsan Executive Managing Director, the supply agreement with Barzan Holdings entity Barer is worth US$171 million. On the second day of the ongoing show, the company also signed a memorandum of understanding with Barood Ammunition Factory, a Barzan Holdings subsidiary, to supply ammunition. The MoU also includes the provision for the transfer of technology to facilitate the local production of ammunition in Qatar.

Standing out among the ammunition on display are the handy Personal Combat Drone (PCD) and the Poongsan Attack Drone with Aerial ammunition (PAD). Soldiers can carry the multi-purpose PCD in their bags, control it with smartphones, and perform a variety of tasks. The PAD, another small drone equipped with aerial ammunition, is said to be capable of destroying armoured vehicles. PAD can fly for 30 minutes and at over 60 kilometres per hour.

The company, which makes anything from 5.56mm ammunition to eight-inch projectiles for howitzers, is also showcasing its range of small, medium and large calibre ammunition. Apart from being the main supplier of ammunition to its home country, Poongsan, which has also introduced extended-range ammunition to cater to increasing demand, has its products in use in more than 30 countries, including the U.S. as well as several countries in the Middle East and East Asia.

Due to the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine, the company has seen an increase in its supplies to Europe as countries on the continent deplete their reserves. The Seoul-based ammunition manufacturer has seen a significant increase in defence exports over the last three years, a growth that has coincided with the general rise of the South Korean defence industry.
