PT PAL Indonesia and Naval Group have taken significant steps to enhance their strategic partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday (Jun 4). Held at the Naval Group Submarine Shipyard in Cherbourg, France, the signing ceremony involved key representatives from both companies: PT PAL’s Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), Willgo Zainar, and Naval Group’s Vice President Sales Director for Asia Pacific, Nicolas Hersart de la Villemarqué.
"This collaboration will enable PT PAL Indonesia to gain expertise in modern and newest surface warship technology, thus making PT PAL a strategic local partner for the Naval Group in Indonesia," said Willgo Zainar.
"In the future, PT PAL will receive full Technology Transfer (ToT) for complete ship design with high and modern technology as well as digital frigate construction management. This will increase PT PAL's capability in building advanced frigates and competing in the global market," he added.
The MoU signifies an important moment for PT PAL and Naval Group, with the shared goal of expanding joint capabilities and reaching potential markets both domestically and internationally. The collaboration builds upon a previously signed contract with the Indonesian Ministry of Defense for the construction of two Scorpene Evolved Lithium-Ion Battery submarines. These submarines will be fully produced at PT PAL's submarine hangar facility in Surabaya, Indonesia.
Beyond submarine construction, the partnership also aims for deeper collaboration. A key project highlighted in this context is the development of the Defence and Intervention Frigate (French: Frégate de Défense et d'Intervention / FDI) for the Indonesian Navy.
The French shipbuilding company has recently offered its FDI frigates to the Southeast Asian country. Also known as Belharra-class frigates, the offer included full local production, a full range of weapons and sensors, and a 36-month construction timeframe if Indonesia chooses to have these frigates built in France.
The bilateral partnership is expected to strengthen relations between Indonesia and France, particularly in the defence sector. By encouraging continued cooperation, both companies contribute to regional stability and security.
