Qatar and the U.S. to Take Ironclad Ties to the Next Level

Our Bureau - : Mar 4, 2024 - : 8:31 pm

Qatar and the U.S. share a longstanding partnership of over 50 years and the two countries have seen their military-strategic partnership grow significantly since 1992. Qatar was designated as a Major Non-NATO Ally (MNNA) in 2022 and remains one of the United States’ closest military partners in the region. Qatar’s Al-Udeid Air Base is home to the Combined Air Operation Center and is responsible for all Coalition air operations in the Middle East and Central Asia. Al Udeid Air Base is the largest U.S. airbase in the world outside the continental United States and serves as a forward headquarters for U.S. Central Command and Air Force Central Command.  In January this year, the U.S. reached a deal with Qatar to extend its use of Al Udeid Air Base for another 10 years.

During his visit to Qatar in December 2023, U.S. Secretary of Defence Lloyd J. Austin III expressed gratitude for Qatar’s continued support for strengthening the defence relationship and welcomed new investments by Qatar at Al Udeid Air Base— a critical, regional node for U.S. troops operating in the Middle East. Qatar and the U.S. will formally take steps to expand and reinforce our bilateral defence relationship, he said. “We’ll do this through Qatar’s commitment to contribute significant resources to increase capabilities here at Al Udeid Air Base, and that will support both of our forces for years to come.”

The Qatar Armed Forces have inked major defence contracts with the U.S. via foreign military sales (FMS) and direct commercial sales (DCS) since 2014. Some of the major buys include Apache attack helicopters, Javelin missiles, early warning radars, PAC 3 Patriot systems, and F-15-QA fighter aircraft. The Qatari Emiri Air Force received its first set of F-15-QA planes from Boeing in late 2021. The Qatari military is also sponsoring an initiative to create a vast network of military training facilities and programs focused on supporting its recent defense acquisitions.

To grow its indigenous defence base, Qatar launched Barzan Holdings in March 2018, which is wholly owned by the Qatari Ministry of Defense.  Barzan Holdings acts as the procurement arm for Qatar’s Ministry of Defense on strategic projects, and has offices and investments outside of Qatar, including in Charleston, South Carolina.
