Qatar Emiri Air Force Completes Five Years with Rafale Fighter Jets

Our Bureau - : Mar 4, 2024 - : 6:45 pm

The Qatar Emiri Air Force has completed five years with its state-of-the-art Dassault Aviation fighter jets. The first Rafale was formally handed over by the company to the Qatar Emiri Air Force in February 2019.

This aircraft, and four others, arrived in Qatar in June 2019. These aircraft made their public debut at Qatar’s National Day celebrations in December 2019, carrying flypasts over Doha. The aircraft have since participated in exercises with many of the world’s leading air forces including the United States Air Force (USAF) and the Royal Air Force. Qatar Emiri Air Force Rafales integrated with USAF KC-135 Stratotankers for the first time during a week-long air-to-air refueling exercise at Al Udeid Air Base in January 2021.

Qatar is one of only two operators of Dassault Aviation’s Rafale fighter jet in the region, and the highly capable omni-role fighter jets have boosted the combat capability of the Qatar Armed Forces.

The Rafale can conduct a wide variety of combat missions, including air-to-air and air-to-ground, and undertake long-range interdiction. Qatar ordered the Rafale fighter jets in two tranches; the first order for 24 aircraft was inked in March 2015 and the country went on to exercise its options for 12 additional aircraft in December 2017. The Qatar Emiri Air Force’s Rafale fighter jets feature a distinctive two-tone camouflage. The country has a longstanding partnership with Dassault Aviation, having previously ordered Mirage F1, Mirage 2000 fighter jets and Alpha Jet trainer aircraft.
