One of the newest military vessels on order with the Qatar Emiri Navy, the Landing Platform Dock (LPD) ‘Al Fulk,’ was recently launched at the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri’s Palermo shipyard in Trieste, Italy.

The launch of the new modern amphibious vessel, which is a major milestone in the modernization of the Qatar Emiri Navy, was attended by Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs, H.E. Dr. Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah.

The order for the ‘Al Fulk’ amphibious Landing Platform Dock was placed with Fincantieri by Qatar’s Ministry of Defence within the national naval acquisition program.

The ‘Al Fulk’ LPD is being entirely built in Italy and is being designed in conformance with the RINAMIL rules for naval ship classification to ensure extremely efficient land-air-marine connections.

The new amphibious vessel will boost the Qatar Emiri Navy’s capabilities in assisting with a wide range of missions including humanitarian interventions and missions in support of the Qatar Emiri Armed Forces.

A variant of the San Giusto-class LPD, the ‘Al Fulk’ LPD will be able to accommodate about 550 persons on board and is 143 m long and 21.5 m wide. It is equipped with two vehicle ramps and an internal floodable dock, capable of accommodating a ready-to-go Landing Craft Mechanized (LCM) that can also be stored on deck and deployed using a system of davits.

A single NH90 maritime helicopter can also be accommodated on board.
