With all the reconnaissance and surveillance tools available to militaries nowadays, one of the biggest challenges is handling the data collected and being able to effectively retrieve it. Rafael offers a solution in the form of Imilite, an image intelligence system. A company official said Rafael was a world leader in terms of image processing. Imilite can be used at several echelon levels, including the tactical, operational and strategic.
“The idea is to bring relevant data to relevant people at the relevant time,” a spokesman explained. Geo-referencing is an important component of Imilite, as images and video are transformed into a map where every pixel gains a geographical coordinate. The system can overlay time-stamped images, mosaics can be created, and 3D models of areas of interest created. Rafael describes the system as the most advanced of any it is aware of.
Imilite was introduced about five years ago, and several countries are already using it operationally.
RecceLite, a reconnaissance pod based on the well-known AN/AAQ-28(V) LITENING, is one system that can send data to the Imilite station. It is flexible because it has a full turret that allows the camera to quickly pinpoint features during a mission. Because the RecceLite is based on the LITENING, it is very easy to integrate on aircraft already using that system.
