Rheinmetall’s South African subsidiary Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) has been awarded two contracts to supply 40 mm grenades to two unnamed Asian countries, the company’s press release said on Monday (11 July).

The first contract will see RDM supplying 400,000 40x46mm Low Velocity (LV) grenades to a new customer in December 2022. The second contract is for a delivery of 100,000 40x51mm Medium Velocity (MV) grenades to an existing customer which will be delivered between December 2022 and February 2023. Both deals are worth around EUR25 million in total.

“With these two contracts, we are expanding our customer base in Asia,” says Jan-Patrick Helmsen, RDM CEO. Negotiations are already underway to increase the quantities.

The maximum ranges for RDM’s 40 mm grenades are listed as up to 400 meters for the 40x46mm LV version and up to 700 meters for the 40x51mm MV version. Both types of ammunition use a High Explosive Dual Purpose projectile which combines fragmentation and a shaped-charge warhead. This type of warhead can be used as a general-purpose high-explosive grenade while also possessing the armor-piercing capability of up to 50 mm of Rolled Homogeneous Armor (RHA).

RDM consisted of Denel’s Somchem (Somerset West and Wellington sites), Swartklip, Boksburg, and Naschem divisions which became a part of the Rheinmetall Defence Group in 2008. Rheinmetall holds a majority shareholder in the RDM with 51% of the shares while Denel holds the rest.
