RENK Group, QinetiQ Partner to Develop Military Hybrid Mobility Solutions

Our Bureau - : Oct 16, 2024 - : 11:21 pm

RENK Group AG, a provider of propulsion systems for military and civilian applications, has announced a partnership with defence company QinetiQ to develop future mobility concepts for military land platforms. This collaboration builds on RENK’s over 20 years of work on E-X-Drive hybrid transmission technology, which will now be brought to the market, completing their range of military hybrid transmissions. RENK’s portfolio will now feature both Series and Parallel hybrid options.

The E-X-Drive hybrid solution, developed by QinetiQ, is designed for use across a wide range of combat vehicles, including uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs) weighing under 20 tonnes. Its electro-mechanical architecture is scalable, offering flexibility for various vehicle designs.

“The E-X-Drive hybrid solution is a fantastic addition to the RENK portfolio and recent technology upgrades to battle proven solutions. The electro-mechanical series hybrid approach will complement RENK product offerings in modern combat vehicle platforms across all weight ranges, including the UGV market under 20 tons”, said Dr. Alexander Sagel, COO RENK Group AG.

Will Blamey, Chief Executive, UK Defence, QinetiQ, added: “QinetiQ is delighted to have entered into this arrangement with RENK, a world-leading manufacturer of military vehicle transmissions. We see this as the next step in the development of this technology, and look forward to working together with RENK to address our customers’ future requirements.”

The E-X-Drive is an advanced electric cross-drive transmission, representing an expansion of RENK’s high-performance land platform systems. The technology has been integrated into several prototype combat vehicles and is designed to offer flexible propulsion architecture for a range of vehicle configurations.

In response to modern land forces’ increasing needs for alternative drivetrains, fuel efficiency, power generation, digitalisation, and autonomous driving, RENK has also developed a parallel hybrid variant of its existing combat vehicle transmissions. This development, part of the EVO product family, includes features like drive-by-wire, power boosts, and silent mobility. The hybrid transmission is available for vehicle testing.

At Eurosatory 2024, RENK unveiled the ATREX, the world’s first hybrid performance transmission for main battle tanks weighing up to 70 tonnes.
