Rheinmetall Delivers Additional Marder IFVs to Ukraine

Our Bureau - : Oct 25, 2024 - : 3:44 pm

Rheinmetall has delivered an additional 20 Marder infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) to Ukraine’s armed forces as part of Germany’s ongoing support amid the conflict with Russia. The delivery, finalised at the close of the third quarter of 2024, brings the total number of combat vehicles supplied directly to Ukraine or through ring exchange programmes to nearly 200.

Among these, a substantial portion consists of Marder 1A3 IFVs. Additionally, the company has supplied both Marder IFVs and Leopard main battle tanks in smaller quantities through ring exchanges. The latest batch of 20 Marders, financed by the German government, carries a contract value in the mid double-digit million euro range, recorded in March 2024.

The Marder 1A3 variant delivered to Ukraine is equipped with enhanced laser rangefinders, aimed at providing more efficient and precise targeting. Rheinmetall’s initial delivery of these vehicles, also on behalf of the German government, occurred in March 2023, with further units provided periodically.

Rheinmetall’s work on refurbishing Marder 1A3 units for Ukraine began in early 2022. Using vehicles from Bundeswehr reserves, the company initially funded the repair efforts independently. These refurbishment activities take place at Rheinmetall’s facilities in Unterlüß and Kassel, where the vehicles are readied for immediate operational use.

The Marder IFV, a long-standing component of the Bundeswehr’s arsenal, has undergone multiple upgrades since its introduction, although it is now being gradually replaced by the newer Puma IFV model in Germany’s armed forces. Over 300 Puma vehicles are currently in service with the Bundeswehr, progressively supplanting the Marder in its ranks.
