RMAF FA-50 Shown with MBDA Brimstone Loadout

Our Bureau - : May 7, 2024 - : 1:12 am

An insight into possible weapon options for the Royal Malaysian Air Force’s (RMAF) new Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) FA-50 light attack aircraft is on display at the ongoing DSA, with MBDA showcasing a model of the FA-50 with 12 of its Brimstone precision strike missiles.

Weighing just 50kg and carried by fast jets on triple launchers, Brimstone provides a high loadout potential for light strike aircraft such as FA-50 compared with legacy missile such as AGM-65. If selected by the RMAF, the Brimstone will allow it to easily engage all ground targets from the best protected tanks to moving vehicles and attack vessels – all with a very high loadout.

KAI bagged the RMAF order for 18 FA-50s in February 2023 for a contract worth USD920 million. Malaysia joins Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand as other regional operators of the Korean type. The other contender for the contract was India’s indigenously developed Tejas Mk-1 light fighter.

The RMAF is slated to take delivery of its first FA-50 in 2026 and will receive a version with Malaysia specific changes related to aerial refueling and a wider range of armament. The RMAF is expected to place an additional order at later date for 18 more aircraft, taking the total number of FA-50s in its fleet to 36. Apart from the Malaysian order, KAI has exported a total of 68 aircraft exported to the Southeast Asian market, such as the KT-1, T-50, and FA-50.
