RMAF’s Second F/A-18D Returns to Active Service After Thorough Maintenance

General Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Mohd Asghar Khan bin Goriman Khan, Commander of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), attended the Handover Ceremony of a F/A-18D jet fighter, following the completion of Local Planned Maintenance 12 Years (LPM12Y) conducted by Rosebank Engineering Company last April.

The event, held at the Hornet Readiness Center (HRC) Hangar in Butterworth Air Base, marked Rosebank Engineering’s transfer of the aircraft to Lieutenant Colonel Muhd Faizal bin Ab Rahim, Commanding Officer of No 18 Squadron.

LPM12Y, a vital Depot Level Maintenance (DLM) procedure for F/A-18D aircraft, has been undertaken domestically since 2021. The recently delivered F/A-18D is the second aircraft to undergo this maintenance, spanning from 5 January 2023 to 15 April 2024. This maintenance regimen includes a thorough inspection of the aircraft structure and repair of structural damage.

In the past, maintenance for RMAF’s F/A-18D aircraft had to be outsourced overseas. However, collaborative efforts between RMAF and both local and international aerospace companies have enabled the successful completion of maintenance within the country for the second time. This underscores the expanding maintenance expertise within the domestic aerospace engineering sector.

The RMAF has eight F/A-18D multi-role fighter aircraft it received in 1997. These jets, along with 18 Su-30MKM long range multi-role fighters, 12 Hawk 209, and upcoming 18 FA-50M light fighters form the backbone of RMAF’s combat aircraft.
