Rostec Plans Production of Unmanned Convertiplanes

: Jun 18, 2020 - : 3:50 pm

The State Corporation Rostec, together with Aeroxo, a Russian start-up, will launch the production of robotic convertiplanes.

“The unmanned aerial vehicles market is growing rapidly. At the same time, convertiplanes are one of the most promising types of UAVs,” said Vyacheslav Mikheev, CEO of Vega Concern, another company involved with the project. “The combination of the advantages of a copter and an aeroplane makes them universal and capable of performing a very wide range of tasks, which allows them to claim a tangible market share.”

Convertiplanes can be used to transport goods, control ice conditions in the Far North, as well as part of integrated projects for monitoring extended facilities of critical infrastructure.

The “Era” family drones will be the first stage of the production that will take place at Vega Concern facilities. The model can stay in the air for more than 3 hours and carry a payload of up to 7 kg.

Aeroxo is also developing an unmanned cargo tiltrotor capable of carrying up to 80 kg of cargo to solve logistics problems. This model of convertiplanes is an aerial vehicle with rotary engines, which, when taking off and landing, operate as helicopters. While in horizontal flight it operates as an aeroplane.

“The cooperation of Vega and Aeroxo will allow companies to take a large share of the existing market for unmanned aerial systems and enter new markets,” said Eldar Razroev, Aeroxo CEO. “The expertise that Vega possesses will help adapt existing solutions for new uses and, in a short time, launch serial production of new unmanned systems based on convertible plans.”
