Russian Helicopters Confident About Latin American Market

: Apr 25, 2019 - : 4:07 am

Buoyed by the response from the Russian market to its civil helicopters, Russian Helicopters is at FAMEX, hoping to continue discussions with potential buyers of the aircraft and to learn more about the kind of aircraft that would prove successful in the region.

“We are here to test the demand for our civilian aircraft and to find out what configuration of helicopters are required,” Igor Chechikov, Russian Helicopters Deputy Director General for After-Sales Support, told Daily News. “We have to take into account the climate and the humidity and also the fact that the helicopters will fly over mountains, land and sea. We want to provide reliability, simplicity of operations and cost effectiveness.

“Latin America is a very important market for us,” said Chechikov. “We have about 400 helicopters in the region, from Mexico and Argentina. Our first task is to support the existing fleet and to discuss with our customers ways to expand our cooperation with them. We will also discuss overhaul of helicopters, upgrades to the fleet and extension of the life of the helicopters.”

The company is promoting three new types of civilian aircraft at the event – the light Ansat, medium Mi-171A2 and the medium heavy Mi-38.  The light multipurpose Ansat features the largest in class cockpit and has proven to be in great demand in Russia. Compact in size, the twin-engine helicopter does not require a large landing site and can be used for VIP and passenger transportation, cargo delivery and environment monitoring.

The company is currently in discussions with potential buyers in the region for the three aircraft, Chechikov said. The company signed a contract with Mexican company Craft Avia Center for the supply of an Ansat helicopter and will deliver it later this year, he added.

The company will consider opening a maintenance center for civilian aircraft in Mexico, but a final decision will be dictated by the market, Chechikov said. “It will depend on the size of the fleet and the type of helicopters. We are very flexible.
