Saab Bullish on Export Prospects for Carl-Gustaf M4

Our Bureau - : Mar 17, 2023 - : 4:05 am

Saab is exhibiting its Carl-Gustaf M4 man-portable, multi-role weapon system at the show, with an eye on potential requirements from Japan and other customers in the region. The Carl-Gustaf M4 is the latest version of the long-serving man-portable weapon system and is in use with the Japanese self defence forces in its M2 and M3 variants.

The earlier variants of the Carl-Gustaf, the M2, M3 variants were produced under license in Japan, and a company official told Daily News, that future production of the M4 variant, should it be selected by the Japanese military, was yet to be discussed. The official did confirm however, that the M4 was being demonstrated to the Japanese self defence forces.  Till date, out of 40 customers for Saab’s Carl-Gustaf family of weapons, 16 have opted for the new M4 variant, including many first time customers.

The Carl-Gustaf M4 is shorter than one meter and weighs less than seven kilos as compared to its predecessors. The M4 variant is 3 kg lighter than the older M3 variant, affording troops greater agility in the combat field with the former. The weight of Carl-Gustaf M4 is less than half the weight of the M2 version. The M4 weapon is backward-compatible with all legacy Carl-Gustaf ammunition, which is an important consideration for militaries, which have large numbers of the recoilless weapon in their inventory.

The M4 also has shot counter, which allows operators to record the numbers of rounds fired from the weapon. The M4 has a life of 1,000 rounds. The shot counter, records all 84 mm rounds fired from the weapon.

According to the official, the Carl-Gustaf M4 can be fitted with a wide range of sights to ensure maximum effect in any tactical situation and flexibility for the user. The system is attached with standard clip-on telescopic sight, and additional options, include an open sight, red dot sight and advanced fire control devices, available. It also has a Fire Control Device (FCD) 558. There no range knobs on the M4 and it has built-in ballistics data for all Carl-Gustaf ammunition, allowing rapid reloading and adjustment, and improved sensors for temperature and air pressure.
