Saab is showcasing a selection of its state-of-the-art defence solutions, at the ongoing show, even as it looks to grow its existing relationships with the Thai armed forces. Saab has been active in Thailand since the mid-1980s, and it is one of the Swedish firm’s most important customer countries with a wide array of Saab products in service across every branch of the Royal Thai Armed Forces. This includes Gripen fighters, Erieye AEW aircraft, 9AIR C4I command-and-control and RBS 70 GBAD with the Royal Thai Air Force; Sea Giraffe radars, CEROS 200 fire control and 9LV combat management systems with the Royal Thai Navy; plus, Carl-Gustaf ground combat weapons and training and simulation systems with the Royal Thai Army. Carl-Gustaf M3 is in service with Royal Thai armed forces and there has been interest in the Carl-Gustaf M4 as well, which is being showcased at this year’s Defence & Security.
Saab’s weapon locating radar system Arthur is also on contract, and will soon be delivered to the Royal Thai Navy. Saab’s world-leading position in civil air traffic management is reflected in Thailand where Saab solutions are in operation at the country’s two largest airports.
Speaking to Daily News, a Saab official informed that the company is eyeing opportunities for additional Gripen sales and for several upgrade programmes including Erieye AEW, 9LV combat management systems, Sea Giraffe radars, and upgrade and expansion of 9Air C4I. “For 9LV Naval Combat systems and Sea Giraffe we are also aiming for additional systems sales related to Royal Thai Navy’s new frigates project. On the ground combat side, we see opportunities for further sales of Carl-Gustaf, and for additional training and simulation systems.” Saab is also well positioned for further sales within Air Traffic Management, including Digital Tower solutions.
Saab concluded the upgrade of Thailand’s Gripen system to Materiel System 20 (MS20) in 2023 and the modifications involved replacing hardware and upgrading software in the aircraft, which has increased both their service life and tactical ability. The RTAF has also expressed interest in acquiring additional Gripen fighter jets and intends to keep its Saab 340 Erieyes operational well into the future. “This means we are aiming for an upgrade of the Erieye AEW aircraft which includes increased ability for the Erieye radar and an on-board Command and Control-unit (AEW&C),” the official said.
Thailand’s Gripen fighters and Erieye airborne surveillance systems are all connected through a secure high-speed datalink network that gives Thai command authorities full situational awareness across the entire nation. This netcentric warfare capability is one of very few complete systems actually operational anywhere in the world.
At the ongoing show, some of the other Saab equipment on show include Network Centric Capabilities, the Gripen fighter, Airborne Early Warning, Naval Combat Systems, mobile ground based air Defence (GBAD) system RBS 70 NG, ground combat weapon systems and the frontline of modern training.
