Saxon Air, in collaboration with RenEnergy, has introduced an electric plane charging port at its Business Aviation Centre at Norwich Airport. Designed and installed by RenEnergy, this new facility, powered by solar energy, is one of the first of its kind in a UK regional airport and supports Saxon Air’s environmental objectives.
The charging port integrates an 18kWp solar array, covering approximately 86 square metres with 44 high-efficiency solar panels, capable of generating 18,146 kWh of renewable energy annually. This energy production is estimated to offset around 3,445 kg of CO₂ emissions each year, contributing to Saxon Air’s goal of reducing its carbon footprint. In addition to charging electric aircraft, the structure serves as a sheltered parking space, helping protect planes from environmental wear.
Saxon Air’s electric fleet includes the Pipistrel Velis Electro, an aircraft used for flight training with a focus on sustainability. This new charging facility supports the company’s ambition to become the lowest-emission flight training centre in England, with a target to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. The infrastructure also minimises reliance on the grid, offering a dedicated space for charging electric aircraft as part of routine airport operations.
Alex Durand, CEO of Saxon Air, noted the alignment of the project with the company’s sustainability vision, stating, “The installation of our aircraft solar charging canopy gets us closer to energy self-sufficiency targets. It also showcases electric aviation to a wider audience as we believe it’s the first of its kind at a UK regional airport. We now have a standalone location for energy self-sufficient electric aircraft operations, and now very much part of normal airport operations. Thanks to RenEnergy and Norwich Airport for helping to make this happen.”
This installation also highlights East Anglia’s progress in sustainable aviation infrastructure. Another regional facility, Old Buckenham Airfield, recently installed a similar solar-powered charging station. Together, these initiatives demonstrate the potential for regional airports to advance clean energy in aviation.
Damian Baker, Managing Director of RenEnergy, highlighted the project’s significance, saying, “We are thrilled to support Saxon Air in taking sustainable aviation to new heights. Working alongside a forward-thinking partner like Saxon Air, we’ve developed an infrastructure that will enable them to achieve their environmental goals, while also enhancing operational efficiency. This project is a fantastic example of how innovative renewable technology can be adapted to meet the needs of modern aviation. We look forward to seeing the benefits this will bring to the sector.”
RenEnergy’s experience in engineering solar installations, such as carports and electric vehicle charging stations, has enabled it to expand these technologies into aviation. The company’s expertise in renewable energy solutions complements Saxon Air’s sustainability objectives and underlines their shared commitment to sustainable regional infrastructure.
Saxon Air provides a range of non-scheduled aviation services, including private charters and flight support, with a growing emphasis on sustainable practices. Through projects like this, the company aims to set a precedent in the aviation industry, demonstrating how regional connectivity can be enhanced with reduced environmental impact.
