Kraken Robotics, a Canada-based marine technology company, sees a huge market for its range of next generation synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) systems in Turkiye and other countries in the Middle East and North Africa region.

“Several countries in this region, including Turkiye have shown keen interest in our Katfish and Man-Portable SAS systems for their navies,” Cem Hasanoglu, Defence Sales Manager at Kraken Robotics, told Daily News on the sidelines of SAHA Expo.
The Katfish system comprises of an actively controlled intelligent towfish, SAS imaging and image processing software. The entire system is designed for quick installation and removal from vessels of opportunity such as manned or unmanned surface vehicles.

The Royal Danish Navy, the Royal Australian Navy and the Polish Navy are currently using this system.

“With its 180 cm Aquapix sensors, the system can provide sharp 3.3 cm x 3.0 cm constant resolution across ranges up to 200 meters per side. With tow speeds up to 10 knots and an integral gap-filler, the Katfish provides unprecedented high-resolution area coverage rates of four kilometers per hour,” Hasanoglu said.

Actively controlled, Katfish is an intelligent towfish platform that is specifically designed for high-speed hunting of naval mines and underwater improvised explosive devices. The system produces ultra-high definition seabed imagery and mapping for a variety of military and commercial applications and is capable of transmitting the sonar data in real time.

The system can also be used in civil purposes such as checking and protecting underwater infrastructure including oil and gas pipelines, and cables.
