Show Reflects Growing importance of AI, Cyber Security in Defence

Our Bureau - : Oct 23, 2024 - : 2:21 am

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing warfare, as the effective use of high technology unmanned systems in ongoing conflicts show. With the defence industry evolving into a complex technological ecosystem and spawning a new set of cyber threats, the need for effective cyber security measures have never been greater.
Recognizing the growing importance of AI and cybersecurity in defence, the ongoing show has separate pavilions set aside for companies with capabilities in these areas. Another novelty is the “Space Pavilion,” which promotes Turkish technologies related to space as part of the National Space Program.

According to Murad Cakir, general manager of SAHA Expo, the idea for AI and cybersecurity pavilions came about following activities with the Defense Industry Artificial Intelligence Talent Cluster and the Turkish Cyber Security Cluster. With Turkish defence companies making their name for themselves in the field of high technology defence products, there is an added focus on ensuring that there is a stream of young qualified workforce to feed the growth of the two allied sectors.

Exponential Growth

According to Allied Market Research, the global military cybersecurity market size, which was valued at US $15.7 billion in 2023, is projected to reach US$68.5 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 15.4%. The increase in demand for defence IT expenditure globally, and the escalating threat of cyber-attacks on military infrastructure and sensitive data, is propelling the military cybersecurity industry.

With the proliferation of sensors, satellites, and other data-generating sources providing a vast amount of information that AI algorithms can analyse and interpret, militaries are able to extract actionable intelligence from complex datasets quickly. This has acted as one of the primary catalysts for the growth of the Global Military AI industry, along with the growing use of unmanned systems in combat. The market size is expected to be worth around US$ 8.29 Billion by 2033, up from US$ 2.82 Billion in 2023. According to WorldMetrics, 33% of defence organizations are planning to invest US$50 million or more in AI annually.
