Singapore Minister for Defence (MINDEF), Dr Ng Eng Hen, commissioned the Singapore Army’s latest suite of “sense and strike” capabilities during his visit to the base of 6th Singapore Division/ Headquarters Sense and Strike (HQ 6 Div/HQ SS) at Mandai Hill Camp on Monday.
The Division’s newly commissioned system consists of the TPQ-53 Weapon Locating Radar (WLR) and the BELREX Protected Combat Service Vehicle with the Advanced Mortar System. During the visit, the minister also officially unveiled the VELOCE 15 mini-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (V15 mUAV).
“In March this year, the Army fully operationalised the third generation Combined Arms Division,” the Minister said. “I have just seen the commissioning of some of the assets of HQ SS – the TPQ-53 WLR, the BELREX Advanced Mortar System and the unveiling of the V15 mini-UAV. Overall we are going to use more artificial intelligence, robotics and data analytics.”
“What we are trying to do in HQ Sense and Strike is to bring together the Army intelligence and Artillery formations,” said Brigadier General Lee Yi-Jin, the Commander of 6th Singapore Division. “Together with 6th Division, which is a Combined Arms Division, we will ensure that our sense and strike capabilities are integrated with our fighting concepts. This will ensure that our manoeuvre units can see better and shoot faster.”
The TPQ-53 WLR, a US-made counter fire radar manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is a highly automated system that requires only about one-third of manpower to operate compared to other similar systems. With a maximum detection range of about 60 km, the radar can quickly and precisely track hostile rockets, artillery and mortar rounds to provide an early warning of incoming attacks and to ensure the accuracy of counter fire.
The BELREX Advanced Mortar System is the Singapore version of South Africa’s Paramount Group’s Marauder armored mine-protected vehicle armed with a highly automated 120 mm mortar that can perform “shoot and scoot” fire operations to effectively support a fast-paced battle scenario. The vehicle is produced in Singapore by ST Engineering.
The VELOCE 15 mini-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (V15 mUAV) is the first locally developed, hybrid Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) fixed-wing UAV. With a quick set up time and operational capability from confined spaces, it’s also able to operate autonomously or in sync with other UAVs and other unmanned systems. Its camera systems include a high resolution video with day and night imagery capability.
