Teledyne FLIR, part of Teledyne Technologies, has been selected to provide thermal imaging and AI-enabled software for the Black Widow drone, a small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) developed by Red Cat Holdings. The Black Widow was chosen as the U.S. Army’s solution for its Short Range Reconnaissance (SRR) programme, following evaluations by several Army agencies. The programme involves procuring 5,880 systems, each comprising two aircraft.

The Black Widow incorporates Teledyne FLIR’s Hadron 640R+ camera module and Prism AI perception software. The Hadron 640R+ combines a thermal imaging camera with a resolution of 640×512 and a 64-megapixel visible light camera. Designed for compactness and efficiency, it enables precise object detection, multiple object tracking, and motion target indication. These features are supported by the Prism AI software, which offers additional capabilities for object classification and tracking.

Red Cat’s Black Widow is a portable, modular system designed to operate in challenging environments, including those with electronic warfare activity. The drone’s flexible architecture allows it to support various mission requirements.

“We are proud to be selected by Red Cat to support the Black Widow with unparalleled tactical capabilities for the U.S. Army’s SSR programme,” said Paul Clayton, Vice President of Teledyne FLIR. ”This collaboration provides the Black Widow with superior yet compact dual thermal-visible imaging along with AI software libraries that enable classification, object detection, and object tracking to complete the mission day or night.”

George Matus, Chief Technology Officer of Red Cat, added: “The Hadron 640R+, with its best-in-class thermal vision, will play a key role in helping the warfighter dominate the night with the Black Widow. We are thrilled to continue our longstanding relationship with the world leader in thermal imaging technology, enabling Red Cat to accelerate deployment to the U.S. Department of Defense and its allies across the globe.”

Teledyne Technologies, headquartered in the United States, specialises in advanced digital imaging, aerospace, defence electronics, and engineered systems. Its operations span the U.S., UK, Canada, and Europe.
