Terrex grows a turret

: Feb 14, 2014 - : 9:57 pm

The Terrex 8×8 armoured vehicle from ST Kinetics has been in Singapore Army service for a few years now, but its manufacturer was exhibiting a new variant at the Singapore Air Show, one that has morphed into an infantry fighting vehicle (IFV).

The Terrex now has some sharper teeth thanks to a 30mm cannon (the type used on the Bionix II) in a remotely operated turret. This weapon can be fired by either the vehicle commander or a dedicated gunner. The fact that the weapon is in the form of a remote weapon station (RWS) means there is no loss of space within the vehicle hull. This Terrex variant can thus accommodate two crewmen and eleven passengers.

ST Kinetics also noted that the Terrex had successfully completed trials for the US Marine Corps’ (USMC) Marine Personnel Carrier (MPC) programme. ST Kinetics teamed up with Armatec Survivability Corp to offer a modified Terrex to the USMC. Competing vehicles, including those from Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics and BAE Systems, completed a fortnight-long amphibious vehicle evaluation at Camp Pendleton, California last July. The tests included ocean swimming and surf transits in various sea conditions.
