The Defence Technology Institute (DTI) of Thailand has handed over a prototype of the D11A Multiple Rocket Launcher (MRL) to the Royal Thai Army for evaluation before it is potentially approved for service.
First showcased at the Defence and Security 2022 exhibition in Bangkok, the D11A system was developed to meet Thailand's coastal artillery requirements, with additional support from the Research and Development Office of the Royal Thai Navy.
The new rocket launcher system, developed in collaboration with Israel, is based on the PULS (Precise & Universal Launching System) MRL designed by Israel's Elbit Systems, previously known as the Lynx MRL.
Thai Defence Minister Sutin Khlangsaeng attended the handover ceremony, where the D11A launcher, mounted on a 10-ton Tatra 6×6 vehicle from the Czech Republic, was officially presented.
The Thai-Israeli D11A system supports various rocket calibres, including 122mm unguided rockets, Thailand's domestically developed DTI-2 rockets, and Chinese-designed SHE-30 and SHE-40 rockets.
The performance of the D11A is claimed to be comparable to the Russian-made Grad rocket system, particularly in terms of the vehicle's speed and the rockets' firing range. The new launcher can fire rockets either individually or in volleys, capable of covering a three-hectare area by launching 40 rockets simultaneously.
The dual-launcher system is also equipped to fire the 122mm Accular missile, which will undergo test firings at the Khao Phulon Artillery Range later this year. The D11A can launch up to 36 Accular missiles, with a range of up to 40 km. The Accular missile which was developed by Elbit Systems, has a claimed Circular Error Probable (CEP) of 10 metres.
