Thales Australia has announced that a new manufacturing building at the Lithgow Arms site in New South Wales has completed construction. The facility, designed and built by FDC Construction, is now being kitted out with manufacturing equipment.
The New South Wales government contributed AUD1.2 million (USD830,000) for the manufacturing facility via a grant from the NSW Regional Job Creation Fund. Thales Australia provided funding of an equal amount.
The OEM expects that 56 jobs will be created there, as production capacity for both military and civil small arms increases for domestic and export markets over the coming three years. The Lithgow facility is Australia’s prime sovereign small arms manufacturing site and it is where the EF88 rifle is manufactured, for example.
Thales Australia had already invested AUD70 million over the past decade to develop the Lithgow factory. Julie Bown, Thales Australia’s Vice President Land, said: ‘Thales Australia is proud of our stewardship of this critical industrial capability that has supported the ADF and allies for more than a century. In an uncertain world, it is vital that Australia maintains its sovereign manufacturing capability to prepare for all contingencies, and our investment at Lithgow reflects our commitment to continue providing advanced capability that’s made in Australia.
