Upgraded SU-25s Boost Azerbaijan Airpower

The Azerbaijan Air Force has upgraded its combat capabilities with the induction of growing numbers of upgraded Sukhoi SU -25 ‘Frogfoot’ ground-attack aircraft. The most recently upgraded aircraft was delivered to the Azerbaijan Air Force, in May this year. Azerbaijan is thought to operate at least one squadron of SU-25s.

Azerbaijan Air Force Su-25 attack aircraft are sent to Türkiye and brought back to Azerbaijan after modernization work by Turkish Aerospace Industries under the Lachin Project. Turkish companies are integrating indigenously developed smart bombs and missiles on Azerbaijani Su-25 as part of an effort to modernise the combat aircraft. Turkish Aerospace is modernising the Russia supplied fighters as part of a contract inked at the2023 International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF) held in Istanbul. As part of the agreement, Turkish Aerospace is integrating Turkish-made smart bombs and missiles into the aircraft and undertaking several avionics modernization activities.

Modernised Azerbaijan’s SU-25s have reportedly been pictured carrying a wing-assisted KGK guided-kit bomb. KGK is a wing-assisted guidance kit that converts existing unguided 1000 lb MK83 and 500 lb MK82 general purpose bombs into long-range, air to ground smart weapons. With KGK, the bombs have the capability of precision hitting of target from 100 km range, in all weather conditions, providing aircraft to complete the mission safely without entering into enemy air defence zone.

KGK has ranges maximum 60 nm when released from high altitudes and 20 nm when released from low altitudes. The KGK wing kit, developed by Turkey’s weapons development house Tubitak Sage, has already been integrated on Turkey’s F-16 and F-4 Phantom fleets.
