Vietnam’s international low-cost airline, VietJet, reaffirmed on Wednesday (20 July) that the company is ordering 200 Boeing 737 MAX of which 50 aircraft will be delivered to its Thailand subsidiary, Thai VietJet.
“Today’s agreement is a milestone in the long-standing and trustful relation between Vietjet and Boeing as well as the Vietnam – U.S trade relation,” said Vietjet Managing Director, Dinh Viet Phuong. “Taking into account of the recent aviation infrastructure constraints in Vietnam, the first 50 aircraft will be delivered to Thai Vietjet, embedded with Vietjet’s signature livery. These Boeing aircraft will soon take off to Thai sky with investment from international finance resources,” he added.
“We are honoured to continue our partnership with Vietjet to drive affordable passenger service in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation regions,” said John Bruns, Vice President of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, India & Southeast Asia Sales & Marketing. “The 737 Max, with its efficiency, flexibility, and capability, will support Vietjet’s goal to grow its route network in Asia and beyond.”
The reaffirmation is a follow-up of a deal signed in 2019 between VietJet and Boeing when the airline announced its plan to increase its order of the Boeing 737 Max twofold from its previous order of 100 aircraft in 2018. As many as 20 Boeing 737 Max 8, 80 Boeing 737 Max 10, and 100 Boeing 737 Max 200 will be delivered to the airline in the next few years.
The company also announced that it signed a deal with Rolls-Royce for Trent 700 engines, including technical and maintenance services, to power the airline’s Airbus A330-300 aircraft on Friday (22 July). While it currently operates two A330-300s, the airline is currently waiting for the delivery of its third A330-300.
“We are delighted to execute this service agreement with Vietjet as the airline begins operating widebody aircraft and expands its network into long-haul operations,” said Ewen McDonald, Chief Customer Officer of Rolls-Royce Civil Aerospace. “We look forward to supporting their Trent 700 fleet for many years.”
