Vietjet, in partnership with the Ministry of Public Works and Transport of Laos, has announced a new agreement aimed at strengthening air transport connectivity between Vietnam and Laos. This initiative, revealed on Thursday in Laos’ Capital, Vientiane, includes collaboration with the Lao Department of Civil Aviation to undertake aviation-related projects and expand air transport activities in the country. This expansion is anticipated to generate up to 2,500 new jobs in the aviation sector.
As part of the agreement, the airline plans to establish its own Maintenance Repair Overhaul (MRO) facilities in Laos. The Vietjet Aviation Academy will oversee the training of the new workforce to meet international aviation standards. In support of these projects, the Lao Department of Civil Aviation will provide administrative, legal, and facility assistance, and coordinate with other agencies to ensure smooth execution.
Vietjet's initiatives aim to enhance air connectivity in Laos, offering affordable and high-quality flight options for both Laotian and international tourists. These efforts are expected to drive economic and social development, boost trade and tourism connectivity, and foster cultural exchange between Laos and its regional neighbours.
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport of Laos has praised Vietjet’s contributions and capabilities. This agreement aligns with the strategic cooperation goals outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding on Transport between the Governments of Vietnam and Laos for 2016-2025.
In 2023, Vietjet opened a state-of-the-art aircraft maintenance centre in collaboration with Lao Airlines. Earlier this year, the airline launched its first route between Vietnam and Laos, connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Vientiane. This service has provided travellers with more convenient and diverse travel options, facilitating connections to destinations such as Australia, India, South Korea, Japan, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Kazakhstan.
Vietnam remains one of Laos' largest investors and trading partners, with 255 active investment projects in Laos valued at USD 5.5 billion. These projects span various sectors, including transport, tourism, and science and technology, promoting trade exchanges, sustainable development, and shared prosperity for Laos, Vietnam, and the wider region.
