Vietnam Aims to Buy K9 SPH from South Korea

Our Bureau - : Apr 26, 2024 - : 4:04 am

In what seems to be a continuation of Vietnam’s Defence Minister General Phan Van Giang’s visit to South Korea in March of the previous year, Vietnam’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced its intention to purchase the K9 Self-Propelled Howitzer (SPH) for the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA).

During the ’11th Korea-Vietnam Defense Strategy Dialogue’ held in Hanoi on Tuesday (Apr. 23), Vietnamese Vice-Minister of National Defence Hoang Xuan Chien expressed a desire to procure the K9, as stated in a press statement released by South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) on April 24th.

“Chien evaluated Korea’s weapons systems and expressed his intention to expand defence industry co-operation, including the introduction of Korean weapon systems such as the K9 SPH and requested co-operation from the Korean government for this purpose,” the MND stated, as cited by Jane’s.

Moreover, the MND highlighted that both nations have pledged to bolster cooperation in areas such as maritime security, cyber security, and logistics. It was also agreed that the recently identified areas of cooperation in defence and defence industry collaboration will be integrated into a bilateral defence cooperation agreement between Vietnam and South Korea, which was signed in 2010.

Vietnam is seeking new artillery systems to replace its ageing arsenal, which comprises 155 mm M114 and 105 mm M101 towed howitzers. These weapons were manufactured in the United States between 1941 and 1953 and were incorporated into the VPA following the conclusion of the First and Second Indochina Wars.

Reports suggest that the People’s Army of Vietnam aims to procure 108 units of 155 mm howitzers.
