Volocopter Seeks Nod for Electric Air Taxis in U.S. Cities

: Jan 19, 2021 - : 5:46 am

German electric air-taxi startup Volocopter wants to introduce its air taxi, VoloCity, to the American market.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has accepted the company’s application for concurrent Type Certificate validation. If the FAA provides regulatory approval to operate the vertical takeoff craft in the U.S., the company would be able to operate flights in cities such as Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Washington in the next two to three years.

Volocopter intends to start commercial operations in Singapore by 2023, with tickets for 15-minute tourist flights already on sale for 300 euros ($360). The two-seat model, powered by multiple electric rotors, performed its first manned test in 2011 and has since completed more than 1,000 flights. The  European Aviation Safety Agency as well as Singaporean authorities are already considering the company’s application for approval to start flights.

“We are the ‘Pioneer of Urban Air Mobility’ and our accomplishments are setting the stage for more extensive adoption of UAM implementation by our industry,” said Florian Reuter, CEO of Volocopter. “By focusing on a collaborative approach to success, we are bringing excellence, expertise, and experience to the table together with our partners, and with that, we are leading the way to bring urban air mobility to life in cities around the globe.

“From the beginning, we have considered the U.S. an important market for our services,” Reuter added. “Certification is the key to this market, and we are excited to begin the process of seeking approval from the FAA to introduce this innovative era of mobility not only in Europe and Asia but also in the U.S.”
