“We Are Not Going to Change Our Identity”

Our Bureau - : Mar 4, 2024 - : 10:58 pm

Although DIMDEX has evolved over the years to become an internationally acclaimed platform showcasing the latest integrated defence capabilities, the event will retain its focus on the maritime defence and security domain, says Staff Brigadier (Sea) Abdulbaqi Al-Ansari, Chairman of the Organising Committee of DIMDEX.

“We are not going to change our identity,” the DIMDEX Chairman said in an interview. “At the same time, we want to give our local defence industry the opportunity to interact and learn from international companies in various sectors. We are trying to attract companies in different sectors such cyber security, training, innovative technologies; essentially anything associated with defence. But we will retain our identity as the leading maritime defence and security exhibition in the region.”

DIMDEX 2024 is the biggest ever edition of the event, Brigadier Al-Ansari said. “The response from exhibitors has been incredible. We are at full capacity at the Qatar National Convention Centre. We have 200 international and domestic companies exhibiting as well as nine international pavilions. As many as 110 VIPs and official delegations are attending; we had 92 official delegations in 2022. Fourteen defence ministers from around the globe and 15-20 chiefs of staff and naval commanders are here. DIMDEX provides countless opportunities to exhibitors for commercial success; we expect to see many MoUs being signed, and deals being announced. We have warships from Pakistan, Italy, UK, Oman and two from Qatar for the warships display at Hamad Port.”

The DIMDEX Chairman has seen the biennial event grow immensely since its inception. “In 2008, we started with a small number of exhibitors. We now have over 200 companies at the event. The percentage of growth has been massive compared to other exhibitions all over the world; we are talking about more than a 30-40% increase in each edition. We are confident that we are on the right track in terms of organization as well as in attracting the right kind of exhibitors. We have been able to attract big names and they keep coming back because we provide them the right kind of opportunities.”

DIMDEX has played a major role in enhancing the capabilities of the domestic defence industry, the Chairman said. “The event has helped them interact with major companies from all over the world and strike partnerships with them. It has also had a great impact in terms of bringing foreign investment to the defence sector in Qatar. DIMDEX gives big companies, which came to the country and saw for themselves that it is the right place to invest, a chance to meet with decision makers. That is a major achievement.”
