The Indian Navy has received its 10th P-8I MPA from Boeing.

The latest delivery is the second aircraft to be delivered from an additional order for four aircraft placed under an options contract inked in 2016.

Boeing completed the on-site delivery of the first P-8I (India) long-range maritime reconnaissance and patrol aircraft (MPA) in Seattle in December 2012. Eight aircraft were originally ordered.

P-8I MPA’s of the Indian Navy also feature India specific changes such as the addition of Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD) boom.

The aircraft is used for anti-submarine warfare missions and is an integral part of the Indian Navy’s fleet,  having crossed 30,000 flight hours since it was inducted in 2013. Boeing’s integrated logistics support has enabled a high state of fleet readiness at the lowest possible cost, a company release said.

In addition to undertaking maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare missions, Indian Navy P-8I MPA’s have been deployed to assist during disaster relief and humanitarian missions.

Boeing is currently completing construction on the Training Support & Data Handling Centre at INS Rajali, Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu and a secondary maintenance training centre at Naval Institute of Aeronautical Technology, Kochi, Kerala as part of a training and support package contract signed in 2019.

This new indigenous, ground-based training will allow Indian Navy crew to increase mission proficiency in a shorter time, while reducing on-aircraft training time resulting in increased aircraft availability.

Boeing supports India’s growing P-8I fleet by providing training of Indian Navy flight crews, spare parts, ground support equipment and field service representative support.

The Indian Navy today operates the largest non-US fleet and P-8 is also operated by the U.S. Navy, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force (RAF).

The Indian Navy was Boeing’s first international customer for the P-8.

The Indian Navy’s P-8Is are based at INS Rajali, the Navy’s premiere Naval Air Station in Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu.
