Indonesia’s A400M Contract Is Now Effective

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Dec 13, 2022 - : 4:04 pm

Indonesian contract for two Airbus A400M military transport aircraft is now in full effect, according to Airbus Defence’s official social media account on Monday (Dec. 12). Signed during the Dubai airshow in November last year, the contract also includes complete maintenance and support package.

At the time of the signing of the contract, the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (Kementerian Pertahanan / Kemhan) also signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) for the future acquisition of four additional A400M aircraft.

While there’s no mention of the contract value, it has been reported earlier that the two aircraft Indonesia ordered will come in the Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) configuration. This will enable these aircraft to be reconfigured from transports to aerial tankers and vice versa according to the needs of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) as their operator.

The TNI-AU has been looking for a suitable replacement for its last remaining KC-130B tanker aircraft which has been in service since the early 1960s.

The Airbus A400M “Atlas” is a four-engine, multi-role military transport aircraft that performed its first flight in 2009. It was first introduced into service with the French Air Force in 2013. With a capacity for 116 fully equipped troops or 37,000 kg of cargo, the aircraft has a range of 3,300 km under maximum load.

Powered by four Europrop TP400-D6 turboprop engines each delivering 8,200 kW (11,000 hp) of power, the A400M has a maximum speed of Mach 0.72 (about 889 km/h), an economical cruise speed of 781 km/h, as well as a service ceiling of 40,000 feet (12,000 m).

Indonesia is the second country in the Southeast Asia region after Malaysia and the tenth country globally as the operator of the aircraft.
